The Fürstenberg Model - Mental Health in Five Dimensions

In order to define what keeps people mentally healthy, the Fürstenberg Institute has developed its own Mental Health model using scientific methods. These five dimensions form the basis of our work at the Institute.

What people keeps mentally healthy

The Fürstenberg Model - 5 Dimensions - Resilience, Relationships, Relaxation & Pleasure, Selfmanagement, Joy of life & Meaningfulness

Our work is all about making sure people get early and preventive support – even before serious mental stress occurs. For this reason, we have always been concerned with one key question: what keeps people mentally healthy?

Scientific studies provided us with the answer and led us to develop the Fürstenberg Model of Mental Health comprising five dimensions that provide the basis for our work. This model defines our understanding of what mental health is and how mental illness can be prevented, forming the foundation for what we do.

The five dimensions

Relationships

Relationships enable people to seek support in difficult times, but also to empathise with and support others. People who maintain good and beneficial social relationships are usually able to express their own needs and feelings and also to resolve conflicts in a healthy way.
Resilience

Resilience is the mental endurance that enables people to actively cope with crises, challenging situations and changing life circumstances and to emerge from them stronger. Resilient people show an appropriate, flexible reaction to changing demands and are able to develop coping strategies for themselves.
Relaxation & Pleasure

People who actively integrate relaxation and enjoyment into their lives can achieve a state of deep inner peace and serenity. They have more positive experiences and are able to engage well with positive feelings.
Joy for life & meaningfulness

Experiencing meaningfulness and zest for life leads to deep satisfaction. Those who have the feeling that they are doing something meaningful - whether privately or professionally - are motivated to shape their lives according to their own wishes and ideas.
Self-management

People with good self-management skills are able to recognise their own emotions, thought patterns and behaviour patterns. They are also better able to regulate them according to their own self-image.
